Benefits: Alternative Therapies

Alternative therapies such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and naturopathy are all the hype within companies. These alternative therapies are starting to be incorporated into companies’ insurance coverage plans, and are proving to be rather beneficial to both the employer and the employee. Acupuncture is an ancient form of traditional Chinese medicine, and involves a collection of procedures, which stimulate points on the body through various techniques. A number of issues can be resolved through acupuncture from high blood pressure to insomnia. Chiropractic, on the other end of the spectrum is an alternative, and contemporary form of medicine. It aids in the prevention of disorders of the neurological-muscular-skeletal system. Chiropractic also helps in join dysfunction treatment. Lastly naturopathic medicine involves focusing on the whole body, and steers away from the use of drugs or surgery. They believe in a purely natural and holistic form of health care.

Advantages to Employees

Alternative therapies provide a number of beneficial aspects to employees. To begin with when traditional medical treatments do not aid in pain relief many times alternative therapies such as acupuncture can be beneficial. Also, when traditional medicine fails sometimes the use of alternative therapies helps to get rid of certain illnesses, such as the side effects that accompany chemotherapy patients. Costs of these alternative therapies are also a lot cheaper compared to surgical approaches. Although this may not directly affect the employee – the company they work for is covering the expenses – since the cost of alternative therapies is relatively low the company is more likely to approve of the treatment, and therefore the employee is able to receive the treatment they need. Also, alternative therapies are a safer option for the individual generally speaking, and hardly have any side effects as opposed to typical traditional medicine that is more often than not accompanied by multiple side effects. They are also a pure and holistic form of healing and therefore are better for the individual. Alternative therapies are also much more flexible compared to traditional medical treatments. Overall alternative therapies can also be beneficial to one’s overall well-being and mental health. Alternatives such as massage therapy or meditation help a person relax their muscles and relieve stress.

Advantages to Employers

These alternative forms of medicine bring forth a number of different advantages to the employer, more so than disadvantages. To begin with – and most obvious – these forms of medicine are much more cost effective compared to surgical practices. This is a clear advantage to employers as it saves them money to claim on insurance.  However, these treatments are also medically beneficial. Alternative therapies make more sense both economically and clinically from the employer’s point of view. Clinically speaking alternative therapies allow for a broader and less severe way to help aid an employee’s medical illness. For the employer this means that the employee can continue working for them as they are receiving treatment, as opposed to when surgery or serious medical care is used where the employee will most likely need weeks if not months off from work in order to fully recover. Alternative therapies work at a slower pace; however, this makes them more effective in the long run and in turn beneficial for the employer.
